Probably who comes to visit Gozo in summer months first thing you hear is probably the most popular yet most beautiful and biggest beach on the Gozitan Island is Ir-Ramla il-Hamra which means the Red Sandy Beach and situated in the northern part of Gozo.

Ramla Bay is reddish sandy beach it’s perfect for families who have small children, it’s shallow and safe. It is very popular beach for local residents, Maltese and for tourists who come here for a holiday or just to have a lazy day in the sun. Its good not only for swimming and sunbathing but also has plenty of space to do some sport activities.

Ramla Bay has all the facilities for the day including the sun beds. If you do get peckish you will find couple of snack bars, coffee bar and ice cream vans nearby. It’s very easy to get to Ramla Bay either by local transport or by car. If you are not that kind of person who likes to bathe on the beach all day you can also explore Ramla Bay’s few interesting historical sites. The statue Our Lady of Hope has been placed by Gianni Gauci in 1881 from nearby Xaghra when he raised a plinth in the middle of the sandy expanse and placed upon it a statue of Our Lady of Hope. The Blessed Virgin holds the Child Jesus in one hand, and an anchor, representing hope under her left arm. Another person from the village nicknamed l-Afrikan offered the rent from a piece of land that he owned so that a lamp could be lit in front of the statue at night. Though the rent has expired and the light is still lit by devotees.

While you are there don’t miss out on the Calypso Cave is perched on the edge of the village of Xaghra, overlooking Ramla. Calypso’s Cave is the place where the nymph Calypso lived and reigned as queen several hundred years ago.
